About Lehigh University

Lehigh University is a private, co-educational university located in Bethlehem, which is a city in Lehigh and Northampton Counties in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern portion of the US state of Pennsylvania, with a population estimated at a number of more than 70 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 6th largest city in the state, after Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Erie, and Reading. There are three general sections in the city: North Bethlehem, South Bethlehem and West Bethlehem.

 

Lehigh University was established in 1865, by Asa Packer, as a four-year technical school, and it was founded to provide a well-rounded education for young men, combining a liberal and scientific education with the technical skills necessary to increase the prosperity of the region. Since then, the institution constantly grew, being recognized today as one of the best universities in the country, US News & World Report ranking Lehigh in its "Most Selective" admissions category and 35th in the "National Universities (Doctoral)" category, The Princeton Review classifying it among the "Best Northeastern Colleges".

 

The university offers a variety of degrees ti its students, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy. Even though the College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at the university, Lehigh is historically known for engineeringand business.

 

Athletics

Lehigh's athletic teams are known as the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, formerly known as the Engineers, until 1995, competes in 25 different sports in NCAA Division I, the most storied athletic program at the university being wrestling, in which, over the past decades, Lehigh has turned out several All-Americans and had numerous squads finish with Top 20 NCAA national rankings.

 

The university's athletic rival is nearby Lafayette College, with which, since 1884, it has met 145 times, in football, making "The Rivalry" ( as the football game between the 2 schools is caled) the most played in the history of college football and the longest uninterrupted rivalry in college football, with the teams playing at least once every year since 1897. ESPNU recently ranked The Rivalry #8 in their Top Ten College Football Rivalries. This game is sold out long before gameday each year.

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Eugene Grace - former president, Bethlehem Steel, Daniel C. Keefe - former CEO Ingersol-Rand, Joe Morgenstern - 2005 Pulitzer Prize winner, John-David F. Bartoe - Space Shuttle astronaut and ISS research manager for NASA, James W. Packardco-founder of Packard Motor Company; funded Lehigh's Packard Lab, which was named after him, Roger Penske NASCAR and IRL team owner and member of International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Zhou Ming-Zhen - Chinese palentologist, academican of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, recipient of the Romer-Simpson Medal, among many others.
